LINER NOTES:
When I hear the name, Lim. I think of ‘Ohana, Legacy, and Music. When I think of Sonny Lim, it reminds me of friendship and the musical brotherhood that we share. Sonny continues the Lim Family legacy playing music throughout Hawaiʻi and abroad with his sisters, Nani and Lorna. He is a talented musician that is always sharing his talents, whether it’s in the studio, playing for various hālau, or composing music. He is one of Hawaiʻi’s busiest musicians, yet he still makes time for the important things in life, which is being a husband, father, grandpa and friend.
In his younger days he was blessed to meet and learn from Gabby Pahinui, Fred Punahoa and many others, which helped to shape his musical journey. Sonny’s biggest influence for music came from his father, Elmer Lim Sr., and his mother, Mary Ann Lim. They gave him the opportunity to grasp the love of music, which guided him to be the musician he is today.
Although, you’ll find his name, “Sonny Lim” on many recordings playing with almost all of Hawaiʻi’s greatest, you will now be treated to his second solo recording entitled, “Hoene”, which means a soft sweet sound. Hoene lets you feel the music that Sonny plays from the heart. This recording will take you back in time to reminisce and reflect of the beauty that surrounds us. Songs like Ka Wailele ‘O Nuʻuanu will bring back memories of the past and present. Hilo E, a childhood song that I listened to growing up with my Tutu Lady in Lahaina. Sonny’s sweet slack key arrangement for Somewhere Over the Rainbow, brings his unique flavor to a song that is loved by so many, including my family.
Honored my friend, to be a part of this journey. May our Heavenly Father’s blessings continue to pour upon you and your family.
Kevin K. Brown
